Ryan Dearth
It all started, I think, from the travel I did as a kid – that is to say, my obsession with people and what makes them tick. Bouncing around the world in a Navy family gave me a unique outlook on how things work and why the world goes round. By the time I was 15, I had traveled more than most Americans, and at some point, I was handed a 1970s Pentax K1000. From there, it’s history…well, mostly:
My path thus far has veered in some interesting directions to be sure. The rundown: I have a degree in physics. I’ve worked for Nobel Prize winners and Pulitzer Prize winners. I’ve spent months at a time working onboard a ship in the Gulf of Mexico and the North Sea. I’ve called at least 12 cities home. When people ask, I say I’m from Seattle. I’ve lived in Colorado for over a decade and it’s had it’s effect on me – I ski, bike, climb, and hike. I love dogs. I listen to music for inspiration, and I shoot pictures constantly.
Ask me about my photography, and I’ll tell you that I’m a storyteller. That I have I have to be fresh, innovative, and hard-working in every aspect of the job. Sometimes, that means rigging myself high above the ground between two trees, hanging out of the back of a speeding pickup truck, or slowing the pace down on set to connect with a subject. I love what I do and push constantly to deliver real images that speak more to experiences than appearances.
